Ten of us strolled through the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in southern Queens. It was a brilliantly sunny day with a brisk wind. I got a little sun-burned. At one point, a feisty goose blocked our path on a trail. We approached it gently, but it hissed at us as it gave way to let us pass. Then we saw its mate sitting on what we think were a clutch of eggs.
