Although it rained as we were driving to the park on Friday afternoon, it did not rain in the park itself. After we set up, we drove north on Old Mine Road to look for a place to swim. Although you’re not supposed to swim in the Delaware River, two people did. When we returned to the campsite, we ate dinner and hiked up the Douglas Trail to Sunfish Pond. You’re not supposed to swim there either, but a couple of us did. We hiked down by flashlight in the dark.
On Saturday morning, it began to rain and we put up the large Campers’ Group tarp. The rain stopped temporarily, and we all drove to the Mohican Outdoor Center where we swam and canoed in Catfish Pond and hiked on the Rattlesnake Trail to the Appalachian Trail.
When we returned to the site, we had dinner and built a campfire. Then it started to rain heavily, and we all crowded under the tarp to watch the fire. (It’s hard to put out a good campfire.) We celebrated Myra’s birthday with a cake in the rain.
One by one, the campers went to sleep. I was the last one up and I took a walk to a boat launch on the Delaware River. It was a misty, rainy night.
The sun came out on Sunday morning, allowing us to dry off our tents before packing them away. I left at noon.
