North/South Lake State Park, 5/14-16/2004

Six of us shared two sites (144 and 146) at North/South Lake State Park in Haines Falls, NY. Site 146 was spectacular, right on North Lake.

When we arrived on Friday, it was cloudy and the wind began gusting but it did not rain. By evening, the clouds cleared and we were able to see thousands of stars.

On Saturday, we hiked to Mary’s Glen and North Point (about 3.5 miles from our campsite, with an elevation gain of 840 feet). It rained briefly as we made the final ascent to North Point. Looking down from the mountaintop, it seemed hard to believe that North and South Lakes were so far away. We could also see many of the surrounding mountains and even the Hudson River.

It rained Saturday night after we all went to bed, but the sun dried out our tents on Sunday morning. After packing up, we drove to Kaaterskill Falls and hiked in a half mile or so. The signs said these are the highest waterfalls in N.Y. State (what about Niagara Falls?), and they are beautiful.
